| SPICE (Software Process Improvement and Capability Determination) or ISO 15504 was published as a technical report in 1998. This report represents the preliminary stage of the ISO norm that will be published shortly. SPICE is a model for the assessment of organisational processes. Prior to commencing with an Organisational Process Improvement you need to verify the current status with reference to a model or standard. SPICE focuses on self-assessments and based on the findings, specific process improvement measures can be planned and executed. You can compare this to using a City Map: if you do not know where you are, a map will not help you. Today, many companies use SPICE to assess and improve their processes. With Automotive SPICE the automotive industry has created a standard derived from ISO 15504 that is used to assess suppliers. This is based on the assumption that only suppliers that provide a certain level of process capability can develop high quality software. | ![]() |
