In 2004, BITKOM conducted a survey among its members on the following questions:
- Which standards and process models are known?
- Which models are being used?
- Which models are planned to be used?
The results show that an equal number of companies (with more than 100 employees) use either ISO 15504 or CMMI. The majority of companies currently do not use CMMI but plan to implement it in the future. 72% of companies believe that CMMI will play a major role in the future as opposed to 46% believing that ISO15504 will play the major role.
CMMI stresses the importance of the institutionalised process, in contrast to processes that are defined but not yet adhered to. In addition CMMI, with its capability and maturity levels, supports evolutionary plateaus on the path to becoming a mature organisation - "Rome wasn't built in a day".
